Key societies dealing with liver diseases and transplantation are organising a “State of the Art Consensus Conference on HCC and Liver Transplantation ” to be held in Zurich, Switzerland, in December 2010. We expect over 400 experts attending this landmark conference with the aim to provide internationally accepted statements on liver transplantation and HCC.
Despite the recurrent coverage of “liver transplantation and HCC” in most of the international meetings, much controversy still exists, and no formal evidence based analysis is available. The organisation of this Consensus Conference will follow the concept of the Danish model. The hot topics are extensively discussed and reviewed well in advance by working groups of key people, named expert panels, within the 18 months preceding the consensus conference. These panels of experts involve surgeons, gastroenterologists, radiologists, pathologists, patient associations, health insurances, statisticians, and ethicists. A panel of HCC-non specialists, the lay panel, will also assess controversial developments regarding expert insights and will produce statements at the end of the conference. The summary of the conference is expected to be published in the "Lancet Oncology".
